Bavarian Stitch | Crochet with Aabhar

A classic, Bavarian Crochet, is one of the starburst patterns that creates a nice three dimensional textured diamond shapes.

Usually, you will find pattern instructions for Bavarian squares, here are the instructions for crocheting a flat fabric. The textured fabric is created mainly using the back post crochet stitches that make some raised ridges acting as borders.

One thing to note in this pattern is that it eats up a lot of yarn. So, before starting a project, ensure that you have sufficient yarn in your stash.

bet	between
ch	chain
ch-sp	chain space
dc	double crochet
rep	repeat
sc	single crochet
sk	skip
st (s)	stitch (es)

Special stitches:

fan: (4dc, ch1, 4dc) in the indicated stitch.

fpdc-cl (front post double crochet cluster):

1. [yarn over, insert hook around post of next dc, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull throught 2 loops on hook] 4 times (there should be 5 loops on hook now).
2. sk next sc.
3. [yarn over, insert hook around post of next dc, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull throught 2 loops on hook] 4 times (there should be 9 loops on hook now).
4. yarn over and pull through all loops on hook.
5. ch1 to close cluster.

fpdc-half-cl (front post double crochet half cluster):

1. [yarn over, insert hook around post of next dc, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull throught 2 loops on hook] 4 times (there should be 5 loops on hook now).
2. yarn over and pull through all loops on hook.
3. ch1 to close cluster.

Foundation ch: (any multiple of 6) + 3, plus 1 beg ch.

Row 1 (WS):	1sc in 2nd ch from hook, * 1sc in next ch; rep from * to end, turn.
Row 2:	ch3 (counts as 1dc), 4dc in next sc, sk next 2 sc, 1sc in next sc, * sk next 2 sc, fan in next sc, sk next 2 sc, 1sc in next sc; rep from * to last 4 sts, sk next 2 sc, 4dc in next sc, 1dc in last sc, turn.
Row 3:	ch1, 1sc in 1st st, ch3, fpdc-cl, ch3, * 1sc in next ch-1 sp, ch3, fpdc-cl, ch3; rep from * to last st, 1sc in last st, turn.
Row 4:	ch1, 1sc in 1st st, * sk next ch-3 sp, fan in top of next fpdc-cl, sk next ch-3 sp, 1sc in next st; rep from * to end, turn
Row 5:	ch3 (counts as 1dc), fpdc-half-cl, * ch3, 1sc in next ch-1 sp, ch3, fpdc-cl; rep from * to last ch-1 sp, ch3, 1sc in next ch-1 sp, ch3, fpdc-half-cl, 1dc in last st, turn.
Row 6:	ch3 (counts as 1dc), 4dc in top of next fpdc-half-cl, * sk next ch-3 sp, fan in top of next fpdc-cl, sk next ch-3 sp, 1sc in next sc; rep from * to last ch-3 sp, sk next ch-3 sp, 4dc in top of next fpdc-half-cl, 1dc in last st, turn.

Repeat Rows 3 – 6 of this free crochet stitch pattern until you have reached the desired length for your work.
