CO multiple of 13 sts for the panel and a few extra on both sides to make up the stockinette st background. For example, you can cast on 4 (background) + 13 (panel) + 4 (background) = 21 stitches for a sample swatch. 

Row 1 of Panel (RS):	Knit.
Row 2 of Panel:	Purl.
Row 3 of Panel:	Knit.
Row 4 of Panel:	Purl.
Row 5 of Panel:	k4, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k4.
Row 6 of Panel:	Purl.
Row 7 of Panel:	k3, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k3.
Row 8 of Panel:	Purl.
Row 9 of Panel:	k2, [k2tog, yo] twice, k1, [yo, sl 1, k1, psso] twice, k2.
Row 10 of Panel:	Purl.
Row 11 of Panel:	k1, [k2tog, yo] twice, k3, [yo, sl 1, k1, psso] twice, k1.
Row 12 of Panel:	Purl.
