Roots crochet stitch is a two-row, two-stitch repeat pattern that creates a textured and open fabric. Each motif looks like a bunch of roots made with a variation of half double crochet (hdc) stitches.
The stitch is perfect for making beanies, cushions, and other projects which need a lot of texture. The Roots crochet stitch is also reversible, which makes it great for projects like scarves, blankets, or shawls.

Special stitch:
long-hdc3tog: Half double crochet over the indicated 3 stitches, with slightly longer loops pulled to the height of a double crochet stitch.
Pattern Instructions
Foundation ch: (Multiple of 2) + 1, plus 1 beg ch.
For example, start with (2 x 10) + 1 + 1 = 22 ch for a sample swatch.
| Row 1 (RS): | 1sc in 2nd ch from hook, * 1sc in next ch; rep from * to end. |
| Row 2: | ch4 (counts as 1dc and ch1), 1 [long-hdc3tog] over next 3 sc, * ch1, 1 [long-hdc3tog] over prev sc and next 2 sc; rep from * to last sc, 1dc in last sc, turn. |
| Row 3: | ch1, 1sc in 1st dc, * 1sc in next ch1-sp, 1sc on top of long-hdc23tog; rep from * to t-ch, 1sc in 4th ch of t-ch, 1sc in 3rd ch of t-ch, turn. |
Repeat Rows 2 & 3 of this free crochet stitch pattern until you have reached the desired length for your work.
