Granny Spikes Crochet Stitch | Crochet with Aabhar
A single row repeat, the Granny Spikes crochet stitch is one of the simpler stitches to learn. And just like granny stitch, it has 3 double crochets and chain stitch in each repeat. And, unlike the usual granny crochet stitch, this one doesn’t have big holes.
This crochet stitch is perfect for so many projects – be it blankets, scarves, or even a cardigan. It is a classic among crochet stitches.

Abbreviations
This free pattern is written using US crochet terms.

Special stitch:
f-spike-st: (foundation spike stitch)
- 1dc in the indicated ch1-sp.
- Make 1 elongated dc in the middle ch of the group of 3 ch from prev row.
- 1dc again in the indicated ch1-sp.
spike-st:
- 1dc in the indicated ch1-sp.
- Make 1 elongated dc in the middle dc of the group of 3 dc from prev row.
- 1dc again in the indicated ch1-sp.
Pattern Instructions
Foundation ch: (Multiple of 4) + 1, plus 4 beg ch.
For example, start with (4 x 5) + 1 + 4 = 25 ch for a sample swatch.
| Row 1 (RS): | [Color A] 3dc in 5th ch from hook, * ch1, sk next 3 ch, 3dc in next ch; rep from * to last 4 ch, ch1, sk next 3 ch, 2dc in last ch, turn. |
| Row 2: | [Color A] ch2, 1 x [f-spike-st] over next ch1-sp, * ch1, 1 x [f-spike-st] over next ch3-sp; rep from * to t-ch, ch1, 2dc in t-ch, turn. Change to Color B. |
| Row 3: | [Color B] ch2, 1 x [spike-st] over next ch1-sp, * ch1, 1 x [spike-st] over next ch1-sp; rep from * to t-ch, ch1, 2dc in t-ch, turn. |
Repeat Row 3 of this free crochet stitch pattern changing color every two rows until you have reached the desired length for your work.
