Pattern Description


Braided Openwork Stitch Pattern creates a delicate braids with lots of open spaces. Once you are good with the decreasing stitches – k2tog and ‘sl 1, k1, psso’, this knitting pattern becomes a breeze to learn. The pattern repeats over any multiple of 2 stitches and 4 rows, of which two are simple purl rows.

You can make a gorgeous Braided Openwork Stitch baby blanket or a wrap. You can also use this stitch for any project where you end up with large knitted fabrics.

Special stitch:

m1 – (Make 1 stitch): pick up the horizontal strand of yarn lying between stitch just made and next stitch using left needle, and knit it.

Pattern Instructions


CO Multiple of 2 stitches. For example, you can cast on 2 x 10 = 20 stitches to knit a sample swatch.

Row 1 (WS):Purl.
Row 2:k1, * sl 1, k1, psso, m1; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 3:Purl.
Row 4:k1, * m1, k2tog; rep from * to last st, k1.

Repeat this free knit pattern (4 rows) until you have reached the desired length for your work.
